Meet Ms. Naima Howard TIA Exemplary Designee for the 2021-2022 School Year! In February 2023, Ms. Naima Howard was designated as Exemplary status in TEA’s Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) program. Ms. Howard joined our district (via Buckner Preparatory) in 2020.  She currently teaches 5th and 6th grade mathematics/science and has been teaching for 9 years in total. Before coming to Cityscape, Ms. Howard earned her bachelor’s degree in education (with a concentration in mathematics) from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. One interesting note is that she has taught every grade level between Kinder and 6th, with the exception of 3rd grade. When asked about earning an Exemplary distinction, she responded “I think it all comes down to how your students perceive you feel about them. My students know that I am there to teach them, yes, but also give them confidence and motivation.”  Ms. Howard knows how important it is to prepare her students for state assessments and future grade levels, but believes it is equally important to teach them character and values.  In fact, one of her students recently told her that she would make a wonderful counselor.  When asked what advice she would give to new teachers, she replied that the focus in a classroom should be an equal mix of academics and social/emotional.  She has noticed that students with emotional problems are most likely to also suffer academically. When asked for some words of commendation for Ms. Howard, BP Principal, Ms. Clarencia Wade, said that when she thinks of the quote, “Every child deserves a champion; an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become…

One of our seven pending TIA designees, Ms. Lindsey Miles, joined our district (via East Grand Preparatory) last year.  She currently teaches 6th grade mathematics and has been teaching for three years in total. Before coming to Cityscape, Ms. Miles majored in criminal justice and had dreams of becoming a juvenile probation officer.  Her desire was to reduce recidivism and show the adolescents that there were still opportunities available to them.  However, she also had the call to teach, which happily brought her to the Cityscape family. When asked about her high marks on the T-TESS and the MAP assessment (student growth), she responded “I really try to ensure that my students are always engaged!” She added with a chuckle, “I am loud and energetic.  I tell the students to match my energy.  Emotions are a big part of how we learn.  I tell them to BE EXCITED when they come to class.  When my kids are excited, I know they are ready to learn.” When asked what advice she would give to those who are currently in alt cert programs, as they chose teaching after earning a bachelor’s degree in a major other than education, Ms. Miles replied, “Give yourself grace.  Celebrate those little victories!  If you have a student who only grew by one percentage point, celebrate that one point!  If you arrive at work late, celebrate that you made it for those students who need you!  Keep yourself motivated through those little victories!” When asked for some words of commendation for Ms. Miles, EGP Assistant Principal, Dr. Israel Garcia, said, “When you are in Ms. Miles’ classroom, it is difficult to miss the action; her voice goes…

Dallas Fire Department Visits ECC!

Cityscape's Early Childhood Center had some special guests from the Dallas Fire Department... a Dalmatian puppet dog named Sparky alongside Officer Lewis. The DFD's Rescue team showed our students what a fire alarm should look like and what sound it makes. Our students also learned what to do in case of a fire or if a person is on fire. They all yelled "Stop, Drop, & Roll," and learned that there should be a Family meeting point in case of any emergency. Another important lesson today was: when to call 911 and what information to give them. Our two students: Gemma & Jesus participated in showing their classmates how and when to call! At the end, Sparky played a couple of games with all of students like hide and seek and a guessing game. To finish off, our students pledged to follow everything learned in any case of a fire. We'd like to thank Dallas Fire Department for their time with our amazing students!

Cityscape’s goal to impact a child’s life in offering peace and hope is met during this holiday season with its first ever Angel Tree.  Board members, administration, teachers, and staff members came together to spread awareness to this great cause allowing investment in the life of students by going beyond academics and offering families additional support they may need through the holiday season.   “We desire to be a light in our community and align with the mission of Cityscape Schools by leading and contributing to our community and society,” said Natica Jones, Counselor at East Grand Preparatory. Across the three campuses – East Grand Preparatory, Buckner Preparatory, and the Early Childhood Center – Cityscape was able to sponsor 28 students from 13 families. All who will receive their presents the week before leaving for their holiday break.  Students were able to write to an angel what they wished for Christmas, and then matched with a Cityscape staff member. There was a 100% Angel-to-student match. Angel Tree at Cityscape Schools administration office This program is successful by creating a great impact in the lives of the students by leading by example and building character and morale through the acts of giving. The gratefulness the families have already shown only inspires Cityscape to keep helping out the community.  “Many times, students read about acts of kindness, but rarely see it done,” said Felecia Lopez, Counselor at Buckner Preparatory. “The angel tree gives students this opportunity and an experience that they can carry with them throughout their life.” This program will stay to be an annual tradition at Cityscape after seeing the successful turnout from both parties – the helpful staff and families.…

Cityscape Schools Celebrates 12 Days Before Winter Break!

  • Post published:December 16, 2022

Students at the Early Childhood Center celebrate “12 days before Christmas plus 1” right before the Winter Break!  This year, the ECC started the Twelve days by wearing antlers or an elf hat and will end with students and staff wearing their favorite pajamas! A tradition that started about only two years ago and has become an annual celebration thanks to Mr. Lopez, principal at Cityscape’s Early Childhood Center.  The students really look forward to the holidays because of all the activities that the teachers and staff offer. The idea first came from Jingle Jangle, which was celebrated in conjunction with East Grand Prep. The center decided to modify this tradition once they moved into the new Early Childhood Center building.  “We made it so that the younger students could participate and facilitated the days,” said Mr. Lopez “The jingle jangle was great but there were some activities that the little ones couldn’t participate in.” One of the favorite days for the students is ugly sweater day, where the students wear a Christmas sweater. “I think the kids really like arriving at school in the morning and seeing their teachers and classmates in the holiday spirit. I see that they are excited to see what everyone is wearing,” said Mr. Lopez. Throughout the year, the staff creates different activities that both the students and parents enjoy, allowing for more parent involvement. “We’re creating moments that are influenced by this one activity in school and it expands to also create a closer bond between parent and child,” said Mr. Lopez. “They are bonding and getting excited to pick out what to dress up as for that day together.”Students from the other Cityscape…
